Solar Basics: How Panels Turn Sunlight Into Power

Verra Solar Team · November 6, 2026

A plain-language introduction to photovoltaic panels, inverters and how a home solar system connects to the grid.

Solar panels contain photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts that DC power into alternating current (AC) that your home uses.\n\nMost residential systems stay connected to the utility grid. When panels produce more than you use, excess power may flow to the grid; when they produce less, you draw from it. How that exchange is credited depends on your utility and local rules.\n\nA consultation can help you understand how these basics apply to your specific property.
